SCUBA divers off the coast of Turkey found a weird, translucent blob of unknown origin floating in the depths. Described as “soft,” “gelatinous,” and containing tiny dots, he sphere was about 13 feet round, the approximate size of a car. Curious about the blob’s nature, the divers posted the video on Vimeo.

Internet sleuths from around the world have attempted to guess what the blob was, then emerged one possible answer. Dr. Michael Vecchione, a squid expert and scientist at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, said the blob was likely a large squid egg mass. Vecchione noted that it’s the “largest” egg mass he’s ever seen and likely came from a red flying squid. Of course, this is a hypothesis and the blob’s nature remains unconfirmed.
