It’s happened again. BBC reporter Steve Backshall was filming the TV Show “Big Blue Live” yesterday when he went off his trolley as a blue whale was spotted by their crew in the Monterey Bay.
It all went down yesterday when the BBC’s Steve Backshall was interviewing whale expert Dorris Welch (from Monterey’s Sanctuary Cruises) on a boat in California’s Monterey Bay when he received word a blue whale was nearby. A chopper broadcast the live shot of the big blue whale in the bay.
“The largest animal ever known to have lived on our planet,” Backshall screams. “Larger than the dinosaurs. It’s back. It’s here. It’s in the bay now. This is one of the most extraordinary things I’ve ever seen.”
The video is a teaser for a BBC and PBS collaboration called Big Blue Live, a television “reality” program showcasing the marine life of Monterey Bay including whales, seals, sea otters, dolphins and pelicans. The show is airing three evenings in the U.S., Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.
We’re not necessarily promoting the BBC show, but it’s refreshingly different than the “Shark Week” programming put out in recent years. Also, isn’t it great that there are actually blue whales in Monterey this week?
