Mermaids training for their PADI Mermaid Advanced Rescue certification helped rescue a scuba diver in distress at Catalina Island last weekend.
Javier Claramunt was scuba diving with his father and another friend, Pablo Avila, when Pablo lost consciousness near the end of the dive. He had reportedly suffered an air embolism.
Just after reaching the surface, they were approached by group of women who were training nearby for the advanced PADI mermaid rescue course. The mermaids were practicing rescue scenarios at the time.
The group swam to the divers, got Pablo’s gear off, performed mouth to mouth resuscitation, and towed him back to the stair entry at Casino Point where paramedics were waiting. Pablo was taken to the Catalina Island’s recompression chamber, where he regained consciousness after several hours of treatment.
