AIDA, The Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense, is hosting “Dance for Corals”, a festive evening to benefit AIDA’s work to protect coral reefs and to raise funds for and increase awareness of reef protection efforts in Latin America. The event will be held Friday, April 10th at La Furia Chalaca Bar & Restaurant, 310 Broadway, in Oakland. Live music is provided by Makru.
The event will feature:
- Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cash bar
- Presentations by AIDA and Earthjustice attorneys on work to protect coral reef ecosystems
- A screening of the Earthjustice video “Coral and Parrotfish: A Love Story”
- Live music by Latin groove dance band Makru
- Raffle door prizes
About AIDA, the Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense
AIDA is a nonprofit organization that uses the law to protect the environment, primarily in Latin America. Their attorneys from and in Latin America deliver international and regional legal expertise tailored to help communities and organizations solve environmental problems. They are a 501c3 organization based out of San Francisco, with satellite offices and staff throughout Latin America.
Protecting Coral Reef Systems
AIDA’s work is focused on Marine Conservation, which includes efforts to restore, preserve and protect the reef ecosystems of Latin America. They address primary threats to reefs including unsustainable development, industrial, and recreational activities, and impacts of global warming.
Latin American and Caribbean reefs are treasures of the region, but many countries don’t have adequate laws to protect them, or to support research, monitoring, and conservation campaigns. Enacting and implementing laws and policies can be difficult because of limited budgets and personnel, and competing national priorities.
AIDA’s reef initiative is based on years of site work, an understanding of national and international laws, and a global review of best practices. They provide decision-makers and advocates within government, industry, and civil society with practical resources and recommendations to improve coral reef protection, with flexibility based on country and context.
