The Northwest Diving History organization, based in Washington state, is holding their annual gathering this October and invites all scuba divers – and anyone interested in preserving diving history – to attend.

The mission of the organization is to record and preserve the history of the people that contributed to the development of scuba diving, focusing on the North Pacific Region. They are working to establish a museum to display vintage diving equipment, photos, magazines, books and artifacts that define diving history. They also offer educational programs and a traveling museum featuring the history and evolution of diving in our region.

This year’s meeting will be held on October 20th, 11am-4pm at the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum in Tacoma. The Seaport features maritime history & local culture exhibits, plus a view of the bay.

The museum also features a vintage scuba exhibit. The exhibit is a collaboration between the Seaport’s maritime museum and Flashback Scuba Museum and showcases early scuba equipment from the 1950s and 1960s. This exhibit includes how breathing devices work, an early wood diving bell, vintage breathing tanks, and hard-helmet diving gear. There are models of Jacques Cousteau’s famous underwater exploration vessel Calypso, which was built locally in Puget Sound at the Ballard Ship Yard.

This year’s October event features a special Presentation by Rob Anderson, featuring “Healing Heroes, One Dive at a Time”. Founded in 2016 by Rob Anderson, Neptune Warrior uses a three-pronged approach of diving, community and coaching to help veterans and first responders.
