Less than a week after more than 220,000 gallons of untreated sewage poured into the ocean and Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, the county health department has declared the water safe to swim in.
Paul Sciuto of the Monterey Regional Water Quality Control Agency announced on Friday morning that water testing completed on Thursday showed bacteria levels had dropped back to a level that is safe for human contact, and a public health advisory was lifted.
Sunlight, rough waves, and a rocky shore all help assimilate sewage into the ocean and help it break down to safe levels.
Divers are advised to make their own decisions and determinations as to where to dive, based on weather and surface conditions and other factors, such as possibly contaminated water.
