In 2014, Southern California resident Cristi Quill lost her mother to breast cancer, and shortly thereafter decided that she wanted to do something to help find a cure for it. With a passion for scuba diving, the answer seemed obvious: she would attempt a world record dive to raise money—and awareness—of breast cancer.
With the help of friends and family members (“Team Amazing”)—and gear generously donated by Sport Chalet— Cristi hit La Jolla Shores in San Diego on July 11th and completed a world open-circuit scuba dive by a female, staying underwater for 51 hours and 25 minutes. Until today (December 30), it was officially just a record attempt, but now the Guinness World Records has officially recognized and recorded it as a new world record.
Cristi commented, ” I can’t even put into words how much this means to me! Anyone who has ever lost a friend or family member to cancer, and those who continue to battle knows… “there’s nothing easy about cancer”, and there was nothing easy about this dive! But, WE battled! WE raised money for cancer research and WE PUT CANCER UNDER PRESSURE!!!”
Team leaders for the world record dive included Team Leader Scott Boatman, Team Coordinator Lynsey Boatman, Team “Cristi”- Nikki Knobbs, Team Logs- Kim Rentschler & Kelly Sanders, Team Media- Amanda Beckwith, Team Tanks- Shondra Stibi & Christie McHan, Team Food- Marilyn Woodley Lamkin & Vikki Woodley, Madi Lamkin, and Team EAP- Jason Bowers.
