The HERO3+, sans case.

GoPro cameras have been very popular in diving for many years, and for good reason – the compact, high-definition cameras offer some beautiful 1920x1080HD video in a compact, easy to use package that just about anyone can afford (starting at $299). Since the first 35mm film GoPro came out in 2004, the camera has advanced significantly and offers a great option for anyone interested in filming their dives. At the end of 2013, GoPro announced an upgrade to the popular Hero3 camera. The camera has several enhancements, but the Hero3+ is still an incremental step rather than a completely new version worthy of being called the Hero4.GoPro has released two different editions of the HERO3+ cameras – Silver and Black. The Black Edition features more capabilities and includes a new remote control, but the Silver Edition still has some newer technology incorporated into it including a smaller profile, longer better life, and better low light performance than its predecessor.

There are a ton of individual specifications and we’re provided links below to investigate further. Here we’ll feature some of the top-line highlights of the Hero3+ cameras.

CAMERA/VIDEO CAPABILITIES

Black Edition—The GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition ($399) offers high resolution video from 720p up to 4k (at 15fps). This edition improved it’s low-light capabilities, with an auto low light mode that will automatically adjust frame rates for enhanced performance. The Black Edition also captures 12MP stills at up to 30 frames per second in burst mode, as well as time-lapse modes at 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 second intervals. SuperView is a new feature that the black edition offers – a video mode that captures an immersive wide angle perspective. This camera also increased its image sharpness by 33%, with its sharper lens and 2x reduction in imaging artifacts. A microSD card is not included with the camera. GoPro recommends high-performance microSD cards, such as the Lexar 32GBLexar 64GBSandisk Extreme 32GB, and Sandisk Extreme 64GB for both cameras. The Black and Silver Edition cameras are 20% smaller and light than its predecessor.

Silver Edition—The GoPro HERO3+ Silver Edition ($299) captures high-quality 1080p60, 960p60 and 720p120 video. It has also greatly improved its low-light video taping capabilities, making it much easier to record with bad lighting. HERO3+ captures 10MP stills at the rate of 10 frames per second. The time-lapse feature allows you to capture a series of photos at intervals of .5, 1, 2, 10, 30, or 60 second intervals. The silver edition also features sharper and clearer footage with reduced distortion and has increased image sharpness and 3x reduction in imaging artifacts. A microSD card is not included with the camera.

The Hero3+’s case is capable of diving with you to depths of up to 197 feet (60 meters).

HOUSING/MOUNTS

Both the Silver and Black Editions are compatible with all mounts and housing that GoPro offers, and of course there are dozens of aftermarket accessories available for each.

Silver Edition—The Silver Edition HERO3+ includes their 131’/40m Waterproof Housing, Higher Capacity Li-ion Battery, Quick Release Buckle, Vertical Quick Release Buckle, 1 Curved and one Flat Adhesive Mount, 3-Way Pivot Arm, and a USB Cable. It does not include their new remote, which can be purchased separately if you decide you need it later.

Black Edition— The black edition comes with everything you’d need to get started on land or in the water, including a great compact remote. Inside the package you’ll also find the 131’/40m Waterproof Housing, Wi-Fi Remote Charging Cable, a Higher Capacity Li-ion Battery, Quick Release Buckle, Vertical Quick Release Buckle, 1 Curved and one Flat Adhesive Mount, 3-Way Pivot Arm, and a USB Cable.

The remote has easy to use buttons in a compact keychain-size package.

There are many other mounts other than the ones that are included, such as a body board mount, gooseneck mount, chest mount, head mount, suction cup, tripod mount, helmet mounts, handlebar, seat post, and pole mounts. If you can find a place to carry or mount it, GoPro probably has an option for you.

JUST IN CASE

The Black and Silver Editions both come in a protective waterproof case that is capable of diving depths of up to 197 feet (60 meters) – an improvement over their standard 131′ (40 meter) housing. Most divers won’t be concerned about this, however tech divers may need the extra depth capability.

The flat glass lens on front delivers maximum image sharpness both above and below water without distortion, and the case includes Standard, Skeleton and BacPac™ Backdoors. The Hero3+ replacement case can be bought separately for $49.99.

The new smaller, lighter housing has a lower profile and less bulk, which means less vibration and lower wind resistance. The new wider control buttons are easier to press even with gloves on, and the top latch which secures the camera is a lot easier to open, even if you have to do it one handed.

Along with the improved latch are larger controls which are easier to depress – another plus for us cold water divers with gloves.

BATTERY LIFE

The HERO3+ uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and is rated at 1180 mAH, 3.7V, and 4366mWh. There is 30% longer battery life for both models – a definite plus! The battery can be charged in-camera with the included USB cable.

GoProApp

GOPRO APP

One of the coolest new features that GoPro HERO3+ edition offers is the GoPro App. This app is compatible with your tablet or smartphone and gives you the power to control all features from your phone or tablet. You’re able to view what the camera sees through your phone or tablet, which makes it easier to pick your shot – especially helpful when you camera is mounted in an inaccessible location. You can also start and stop recording, change camera settings, switch modes, and check your battery level. Viewing photos and playing back video recording can be done right after you take a picture or record a video through this impressive app. Sharing pictures and videos can be done through this app, and updating your HERO3+ just became much easier as it can be updated directly through the app.
