When you’re a crab, you know that if you see an octopus underwater you better start running. But being out of the water is safe territory, right?
Apparently not. This crab found out the hard way after being ambushed by an octopus on land.
In Yallingup, located in western Australia, a crab minding its own business on the rocks outside a tide pool was ambushed by a hungry octopus, shocking a woman who happened to be watching. She captured it all on video.
“I don’t know why I started filming it, but I always have a camera in front of my face,” she said.
Perhaps it’s a new species – a rocktopus?
Here’s what went down:
While this occurred in Australia, octopus are also very common to the Pacific coastline. Giant Pacific octopuses are found along the coasts of the northern Pacific Ocean, from California all the way to the shores of Japan and China. They can reach up to 16 feet in length and weigh up to 110 pounds. According to National Geographic, the largest giant Pacific octopus ever encountered was 30 feet across and weighted more than 600 pounds.
