On Monday, two fisherman came across two conjoined whales at Ojo de Liebre lagoon in Baja, California. The whales weighed about 1,000 pounds and measured approximately 14 feet in length, and it’s believed they died shortly after being born.
Adult grey whales grow up to 49 feet long and weigh as much as 36 tons. They can live as long as 70 years – about the same as humans. Normally, newborns measure from 4.9 m (16 ft) in length, so these two appear to have been fully developed.
Now ashore, scientists are collecting samples of skin, muscle and baleen – the mammals’ filter-feeder system – for research.
