There’s a new LED dive light on the horizon, and this one has one very unique feature: it runs on saltwater.
The SWES (Sea Water Energy System) Technology SDL-600 Dive Light contains an energy cell comprising of an anode and a cathode precisely spaced apart. When an electrolyte liquid (salt water) surrounds the two elements, an electrical current is produced to power the single CREE XM-L2 light, producing approximately 600 lumens of light. Since it is powered by salt water, it never needs batteries or recharging and will continue to run for more than 2,000 hours.

The SDL-600 light is not just a concept, it’s a working dive light that will hit the market in 2017. Aside from producing light without a battery, the light also has several other features divers may like.
The light is…light. Weighing in at just 702 grams, the light is made of durable ABS plastic and has a maximum depth rating of 100 meters. With very simple construction, it has no moving parts and requires no maintenance, aside from a quick rinse with fresh water after diving.
