By the Numbers: 681 Youth, Four Camps, and a Stellar Certification Rate
Scuba diving has long been recognized as the closest experience to zero-gravity space exploration available on Earth. Recently, Dive into Space Youth Camps Inc., with training conducted by California Scuba Center Inc., turned this concept into an incredible reality for hundreds of young explorers across Central California.
What began 11 years ago as a single, standalone youth camp has evolved into a massive, multi-district educational phenomenon. Through a monumental outreach effort, the organization successfully hosted 571 youth across four distinct camp programs this summer and over 1,478 youth over the last 4 years. By blending the thrill of underwater breathing with the awe of space exploration, the initiative not only introduced hundreds of kids to the dive industry but proved to be far more than just a scuba diving camp. It is a comprehensive life-skills incubator that delivers vital communication training, intense team-building experiences, and academic enrichment.

A Decade of Growth and Community Partnerships
The dramatic expansion of the program is rooted in strong community integration and continuous growth. Over the last 11 years, the program has scaled by forming strategic alliances with major local educational networks:
- Fresno Unified School District Extended Learning Outreach Program: Partnered for the past 4 years.
- City of Reedley After School Program: Partnered for the past 2 years.
- Madera Unified School District Extended Learning Outreach Program: A brand-new partnership added this year.
In addition to a standalone public camp offering, the organization is currently in ongoing discussions with several other local school districts to expand their reach even further next year.
The Four Missions: Scuba Classrooms, Science, and SEI Support
Supported by Scuba Educators International (SEI), which issues the program’s certifications, the curriculum was ingeniously structured into four distinct camps. Every program utilizes a dedicated scuba classroom environment to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, allowing youth of all experience levels to participate, progress, and challenge themselves:
- Introduction to Dive into Space: The perfect launchpad. Starting in the scuba classroom and moving to the water, this camp introduces students to the fundamental concepts of diving, equipment, and the striking parallels between the underwater world and outer space. Youth are introduced to challenges designed specifically around team building and non-verbal communication.
- Dive into Space: A deeper immersion into aquatic exploration, where youth expand their comfort zones and tackle new collaborative challenges designed specifically around team building and non-verbal communication.
- Diving Adventures: Exclusively designed for certified youth divers, this advanced camp takes students far beyond the basics. The curriculum integrates marine science, underwater navigation, and search and recovery operations, allowing participants to hone their buoyancy, problem-solving, and teamwork in demanding underwater scenarios.
- Career Technical Education (CTE) Career Pathway Open Water Certification Course: A rigorous, vocational-level program designed to turn curious students into fully certified, capable scuba divers ready for real-world application.

Stellar Certification Success & The Post-Camp Pipeline
The true testament to the quality of instruction by California Scuba Center Inc. is found in the SEI certification results.
In the highly demanding CTE Career Pathway Open Water Certification course, an incredible 32 out of 36 students successfully earned their Open Water certifications. Furthermore, the Diving Adventures Camp advances certified divers’ training by introducing the OTS Guardian FFM and other advanced skills. In the Full Face Mask (FFM) training module—which relies heavily on advanced verbal communication skills underwater—22 out of 28 candidates successfully earned their FFM certifications. This is an impressive feat for youth divers, giving them a true taste of commercial diving and astronaut training.
But the journey doesn’t stop when camp ends. To keep youth engaged in the sport, California Scuba Center offers each camp attendee the opportunity to become fully certified divers after the completion of the camps for a minimal fee of just $100.
This post-camp pipeline has been phenomenally successful. Over the last three years, this initiative has resulted in the certification of over 180 Junior Open Water and Open Water Divers. The momentum is only growing: this year alone, there is already a list of over 63 camp attendees who wish to pursue their certification. Even better for the dive industry, this youth enthusiasm is contagious—many of these young divers will have their parents getting certified right alongside them, creating entire families of new lifelong divers.
The Visionary Behind the Mission: Meet Michael Fitzgerald
At the helm of this unprecedented growth is Michael Fitzgerald, the CEO of both Dive into Space Youth Camps Inc. and California Scuba Center Inc. With over 30 years of dive experience and a formidable background as an SEI Instructor Trainer, DAN Examiner, and Technical Diver, Fitzgerald understands both the rigorous safety standards required for diving and the hard economics of running a profitable dive operation.
His dual perspective is exactly what has allowed the program to maintain elite instructional quality while aggressively expanding its community reach.

The Business Case: Unlocking High-Volume Revenue
Beyond the educational and developmental triumphs, the “Dive into Space” model has proven to be an incredibly lucrative business engine. For dive shops looking to combat seasonal lulls or expand their financial footprint, youth camps offer a highly successful and popular revenue stream.
The financial growth of the program speaks for itself:
- Last Year: The camps generated just shy of $600,000 in gross revenue over a 4-week period.
- This Year: The expanded 6-week program earned the dive center almost $750,000 in gross revenue.
Because of this overwhelming success, Dive into Space Youth Camps Inc. is actively looking to partner with other dive centers across the country that are seeking additional, reliable revenue sources and want to implement this turnkey youth program in their own communities.
Connect at DEMA: Industry professionals looking to learn from his blueprint are highly encouraged to seek out Michael Fitzgerald at this year’s DEMA Show. Make sure to attend his featured presentation on “Stop Running a Dive Shop and Start Running a Dive Business” and be sure to catch his insights during his round table discussion at the Deep Blue Adventures event booth.
Beyond the C-Card: Building Life Skills
While the certifications, the $750,000 in revenue, and the sheer volume of 681 attendees are massive wins for the scuba industry, the ultimate success of the program lies in the personal development of the youth.
As a program that operates far beyond a traditional scuba camp, every element is rooted in life skills development. From analyzing dive tables in the scuba classroom to successfully executing search and recovery patterns, participants learn critical thinking and academic discipline. Every underwater drill and surface interval is designed to foster essential team building. Participants learn to rely implicitly on their dive buddies, resulting in profound trust and vastly improved communication skills.
By overcoming the natural hesitations of stepping into a new environment, these young aquanauts have built a foundation of confidence, resilience, and teamwork that will serve them well into the future, both above and below the surface.
