Oceans, based in Stockholm, Sweden, has just announced their new S2 dive computer, which is being funded with the help of an online Kickstarter campaign. The S2 dive computer will be Oceans’ second model, following up on the S1 which was released in 2019.
The Oceans S1 and the new S2 dive computers are unique in that they offer ultrasonic communication between each unit, allowing divers to send messages to each other instantly. The S1 computer allowed one buddy to summon another with a notification on the display with the name of the diver looking for attention; the S2 will increase this functionality by adding 5 additional messages that can be sent to connected dive buddies. The options include “Ascend”, “Stay”, “Cold”, “Shark”, and “Assist”. The buddy comms work at a rated distance of 20 meters (60ft) or more, depending on conditions. Up to 8 buddies can be connected to receive buddy pings.
The S2 dive computer will also utilize Oceans TX Supersonic AI (Air Integration) transmitter, which monitors tank pressure with a wireless transducer. This not only allows the monitoring of air pressure without a hose, it also allows a diver to monitor the air supply of up to 5 divers, allowing you to return home with the weakest link on your team (just kidding). The range is rated at up to 15 meters (50ft) of distance between transmitter and computer.
Once the dive has ended, the S2 will allow a diver to wirelessly connect (via Bluetooth) to the Oceans logbook app to import dives into a digital logbook.
Naturally, the S2 dive computer is also a full functioning dive computer.
Oceans (oceans.io) was founded in 2014, but its leadership has a long history in diving. Since the beginning, actually. Aquanaut, filmmaker, TED speaker and environmental advocate Fabien Cousteau is a partner and advisor in the company.
